The bi-partisan majority of Americans believe the economy is rigged against them and in favor of the rich. They. Are. Right. How do you rig an economy? You start with the tax code.
Our current tax code allows billionaires and corporations to pay nothing while working Americans pick up the tab. The code values every dollar an investor makes over every dollar a working person makes, and values inherited income most of all. The code encourages wealth hoarding and promotes family dynasties (like the one we left England 250 years ago to escape). The tax code even gives tax breaks for charitable giving that actual charities never receive.
It’s a mess.
Not only is our tax code a key driver of the destabilizing level of inequality we currently suffer; it also guarantees we will become even more unequal, even more quickly over time. The existential threat to our nation is one of our own creation.
Therein lies the hope. If we rigged it; we can unrig it.

About the Patriotic Millionaires
Patriotic Millionaires believe the economy should be judged on whether or not the millions of people working hard within it can live happy and prosperous lives. It should not be judged on how rich it can make a few billionaires or how much CEOs get paid to ship American jobs overseas. We need an economy and a tax code that reflects our best values, not one that encourages our worst instincts.
Patriotic Millionaires don’t want tax breaks for our private jets. We don’t want to hide our money in Swiss bank accounts. And we sure as heck don’t want to pay lower tax rates than the people who work for us. And it’s not because we are nice or good or altruistic, by the way. We are just as greedy as the Other Millionaires, we’re just greedy for a different kind of country than they are.
The *Other Millionaires* want to live in a country with a tiny number of rich people, millions of poor people and no middle class. They want special treatment. They think they deserve special treatment. They puff up their chests, call themselves “Job Creators” and insist the economy will collapse if (god forbid!) they are asked to pay a single penny more in taxes.
Nonsense.
Millionaires put their pants on one leg at a time, just like everyone else. Consumer demand is the only real “job creator”. And nothing is going to collapse if millionaires pay their fair share (except for possibly an over-inflated ego or two).

Patriotic Millionaires want to live in a country with a basic sense of fairness, where millionaires don’t get special treatment just because they’re rich. The “Other” Millionaires want special treatment, they think they deserve special treatment. They insist the economy will collapse if they pay a penny more in taxes. Nonsense.
